Short Description	The rural town of Tatura was the site of the first World War two purpose-built camps. Camps 1 and 2 were less than one kilometre apart. Camp 1 was opened in 1940 to hold German and Italian internees in compounds separated by barbed wire. More huts were built as numbers of internees increased and only the mess halls were provided with heating. Detainees built tennis courts, workshops and gardens for both flowers and vegetables. Some detainees also set up themselves up as tailors and barbers. Camp 2 was set up in September of the same year and held Italians PoWs, German Officers and German Jewish internees. Detainees lived in tin huts divided into separate cabins for two. Both camps closed in January 1947.
