Short DescriptionEttore Baistrocchi (1905-1996) was born in Livorno on 26 February 1905. He graduated from the Higher Institute of Economics and Commerce in Rome on 10 July 1926. He entered the diplomatic service in 1928 and in 1930 was appointed vice-consul in São Paulo, Brazil. From 1933 to 1935, he served at the Embassy in Montevideo and until 1939 in Belgrade. In 1940, he was consul in Tokyo and from 1942 in Kobe-Osaka. He was interned in St Francis of Assisi Denenchofu Catholic church in Ōta, Tokyo (converted into a prison) in September 1943 following his refusal to join the Republic of Salò. In August 1945, he was freed by American forces and returned to Italy. In 1946, he returned as consul general in Kobe-Osaka. He was consul general in Buenos Aires from 1950 to 1954, consul in Alexandria, Egypt, until 1956, and in Paris until 1961. From 1961, he was ambassador in Lima and, from 1966, in Kinshasa. He retired in 1970.
