| Full Biographical Data | Giovanni Baldelli was born in Milan in 1914. In 1929, he moved to France and soon rejected fascism, drawing inspiration from anarchist thinkers. By 1932, he had returned to Italy and joined the anti-fascist group Giustizia e Libertà, leading to his arrest in 1933. In 1937 he moved to London where he taught languages. In 1940 Baldelli was arrested for his anti-fascist views. He was transferred to Australia on Dunera ship as an enemy alien where he spent 4 years, until 1944. While being imprisoned, he continued to teach languages and also produced and directed plays at the Tatura Camp No. 2. Together with another internee Giorgio Scola he was the editor for the camp newsletter Gioventu. After returning to England in 1945, he worked in agriculture before becoming a teacher. From the 1950s to the 1970s, he published poems, plays, and essays, with his key philosophical work Social Anarchism appearing in 1971. Throughout his life, Baldelli remained committed to anarchist ethics, education, and resistance to authoritarianism. |
