L’Ortica was a weekly publication produced at Camp Weingarten to entertain the POWs and, in part, to provide them with basic knowledge of mechanics and general culture. In the publication, the common thread is irony, with occasional touches of satire. It includes poems, music, rhymes, and crossword puzzles. Drawings, portraits, and caricatures are always present, and there is considerable attention for educational articles on the basic elements of music, mechanics, and engines. The publication also features short stories and accurate sports reports on soccer matches and bocce games. Almerini wrote articles and poems, but above all, he drew portraits of his fellow soldiers, illustrations to accompany written pieces, cartoons, and sketches. |
